Positive Youth Action Towards Climate Change

2013 •

Paul Pace

This study focuses on the experiences of young people who are leaders of change in the environmental field. This study views environmental activism as a personal commitment towards pro-environmental behaviour. The motivations and challenges of such work are viewed as important to learn more not only about volunteering in environmental organisations, but also about pro-environmental behaviour. The main research problem was to explore these individualsí present and past life experiences, in the light of their activism, towards the issue of climate change. Narrative inquiry was chosen as a methodology for this research as it gives importance to experience and facilitates the study of an issue in all of its wholeness and complexity. The research involved in-depth interviews with three participants as well as living alongside the participants in an effort to build a relationship with them and to experience being an environmental activist. The participants were members of a local environm...

Empowering emerging leaders in marine conservation: the growing swell of inspiration

Dr Rebecca Koss

1. Young marine conservation leaders can create and mobilize change when they are inspired, empowered and actively involved in decision-making processes. 2. This paper provides a journey overview of the opportunities, challenges and commitments for young conservation leader empowerment within the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and its Commissions to create change. 3. Young conservation leadership contribution to the development and delivery of the 2014 IUCN World Parks Congress highlights the drive by this cohort to inspire and mobilize change. 4. Global marine conservation initiatives being led by transformative young leaders in partnership with senior leaders with the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas Young Professionals (WCPA YP) group and the recently established IUCN WCPA Young Professionals Marine Task Force are actioning change. 5. This paper highlights a critical need for the global conservation sector to invest in current and emerging young conservation leaders for creating change.

Youth Ecological Revolution

Youth Ecological Revolution: A handbook for leaders

2022 •

Frank Rotering

The core truth about the ecological crisis is that humankind has heedlessly followed its biological impulses by expanding its economy beyond the Earth's natural limits. Our planet entered this overshoot condition around 1950, and its calamitous impacts were evident to informed minds by the mid-1960s. The environmentally concerned have therefore had more than half a century to examine both the unfolding crisis and the human response. The main lessons are these: The Earth, as a habitat for humankind and non-human species, is acutely sensitive to environmental disturbances; The powerful people who control global capitalism will not abandon their ecocidal path, no matter how catastrophic the crisis becomes; As a biological species humankind is strongly motivated to serve its material interests; its natural tendency is therefore to support both economic expansion and the social forces that drive it. Youth Ecological Revolution examines these and related issues from the perspective of the global young, who will be the most severely impacted by ecological collapse. Its main aim is to provide rational guidance to the prospective leaders of militant movements for youth ecological survival. The book first describes how the IPCC existentially betrayed the young by permitting greenhouse-gas concentrations to soar far above their safe levels. It then presents the objective facts about the ecological crisis, outlines the rational response, and proposes a revolutionary strategy to implement it. It also exposes the numerous falsehoods told by mainstream actors to preserve the capitalist status quo. The book's appendixes feature a Youth Survival Manifesto that succinctly presents the youth case for fundamental change. Also included are proposed statements by several key groups regarding their radical responses to ecological collapse.

Children as drivers of change: The operational support of young generations to conservation practices

Corrado Battisti

ABSTRACT Children are the target of educational actions, both as passive subjects to whom conservation strategies are directed, and as active participants able to support operational management actions. Conservation actions driven by children can play an important role in critical social contexts where external (anthropogenic threats) and internal (organizational weaknesses) conditioning factors hinder effective protected areas management. In this article, we propose a case study where children involved in conservation practices offer operational support to overcome internal weaknesses of a park agency, motivate parks, staff and mitigate a series of anthropogenic threats. We used the “threat analysis” approach, derived by the Theory of Change, to define a causal chain linking ecosystem targets, human-induced threats, and conservation measures in a framework. We believe that conservation driven by children can be an innovative way to implement protected areas management in socially-degraded landscapes to the point of fostering local support for conservation.

The Case for Young People and Nature: A Path to a Healthy, Natural, Prosperous Future

2011 •

Karina von Schuckmann

Global warming due to human-made gases, mainly CO2, is already 0.8{\deg}C and deleterious climate impacts are growing worldwide. More warming is 'in the pipeline' because Earth is out of energy balance, with absorbed solar energy exceeding planetary heat radiation. Maintaining a climate that resembles the Holocene, the world of stable shorelines in which civilization developed, requires rapidly reducing fossil fuel CO2 emissions. Such a scenario is economically sensible and has multiple benefits for humanity and other species. Yet fossil fuel extraction is expanding, including highly carbon-intensive sources that can push the climate system beyond tipping points such that amplifying feedbacks drive further climate change that is practically out of humanity's control. This situation raises profound moral issues as young people, future generations, and nature, with no possibility of protecting their future well-being, will bear the principal consequences of actions and inactions of today's adults.
