Hi friends, how are you today? Did you catch my Instagram Live the other evening when I made my mother-in-law’s Chicken Piccata? If you did, thank you! If not, you can watch it on my feed here. It was so fun to be with y’all for a little while, but even more fun to share all about Dishtory with you since I think it’s such a cool and unique concept. We’ve really been trying to hone in on experiences over gifts this season and with everything going on in the world this year, this season may be a difficult one for shopping, etc. My solution, don’t shop! Give them the gift of a family recipe recorded by yourself and start making your family recipes viewable through video and audio to your whole family. It’s really a keepsake from the heart and one that’s fun.

So what is Dishtory you might ask if you missed the live. It’s an app that allows users to record, save and share family members’ recipes in their own voice, so they can create, plate and curate home-cooked creations with people who matter most. Once a recipe is uploaded to the platform, it can be shared throughout your family to keep Grandma’s baked apple pie, Mom’s famous meatloaf or Dad’s roasted chicken breast alive and accessible for everyone.

My live focused on my mother in law’s Chicken Piccata recipe and while we didn’t make the entire dish, I’m sharing it below with you (and in the Dishtory app) so that you can make it with your loved ones this holiday season.

Here is what you need:

  • Chicken Breast
  • Lemons (3-4)
  • Capers (small whole jar)
  • 4 cups Chicken Broth
  • 2 Cups flour
  • Mushrooms sliced, one package
  • Salt and Pepper to taste
  • Angel Hair Pasta (or rice, your call!)
  • Olive Oil
  • 1 egg
  • Shaved Parmesan cheese

Here is what you do:

  1. In a small skillet brown sliced mushrooms using olive oil. Cook thoroughly (5-10 minutes). Set aside.
  2. While mushrooms are cooking, cut chicken into chunks.
  3. In one bowl use one cup flour with salt and pepper for seasoning. In another bowl, beat egg.
  4. Dredge chicken chunks into egg and then into flour mixture, coating them completely.
  5. In a large pan (the deeper the better for sauce), coat bottom with olive oil on medium heat. Carefully, one by one, add chicken pieces into the heated olive oil. During this process, you may need to add additional olive oil to brown chicken.
  6. Turn chicken pieces until browned on all sides. Slowly add chicken broth and the juice of two lemons into pan, scrapping the “brown” off the bottom. Cover and simmer chicken until chicken is tender (mine often boils slightly) (5-10 minutes).
  7. Begin boiling angel hair pasta or cooking rice.
  8. Once chicken is cooked thoroughly, add a few tablespoons of flour into sauce to thicken. At this time, you can add additional chicken broth to create more sauce.
  9. Continue to add flour into the chicken broth and salt and pepper to create a sauce. Add additional lemon juice to taste.
  10. Add small jar of capers and mushrooms back into the pan. At this point, the chicken is cooked and the sauce is thickening. Add additional broth and lemon as needed.
  11. Continue to stir coating mushrooms and chicken in sauce. Plate the paste and then scoop chicken on top, spooning desired sauce amount over top.
  12. Top with shredded parmesan cheese and enjoy!

So good and also, great for leftovers!

My mother-in-law made this piccata recipe for Aaron and our college friends on weekend in college when she was visiting. Years later, she taught me how to make the recipe when she came to visit us in North Carolina. It was a full circle moment for me and a recipe that I now make for guests and “fancy” cooking nights. It’s not hard, but it’s always delicious and it’s one I’ll teach Penelope to make, too (as you can see, I’m already starting to). Thanks to Dishtory, she’ll always have access to the piccata (and all my recipes) even after I’m long gone one day.

The concept of Dishtory was born when a co-founder’s mother left a voicemail describing how to make their family sugar cookie recipe. After listening to the voicemail in his mom’s voice, he was inspired and wanted to give everyone the ability to share the same experience. I LOVE that. I’ve never told anyone, but I keep voicemails from my Dad saved on my phone, just because I love hearing him say “Aims, it’s your faaather, call me back.” I love his drawn out “father” and so I want o keep it always. My dad doesn’t cook, but this concept is so amazing for those women (and some men) in my life that do. My Grandma always makes homemade custard this time of year, so I plan to have her record her recipe on the app this Thanksgiving so that we always have the recipe in her own voice to treasure and go back to.
