Suns looking for a true point guard
The Phoenix Suns are coming off a disappointing season that saw them swept in the first round of the playoffs by the Minnesota Timberwolves. Despite being over the second apron, and limited in their ability to add outside talent, Phoenix has three priorities this offseason. The Suns want to add a true point guard that can play 20-plus minutes per game. Phoenix went most of last season without a true point guard in their rotation.

The team would also like to add a young, athletic wing. The Suns relied mostly on veterans last year, after inking several players to minimum contracts. Lastly, Phoenix would like to add a backup center to upgrade from Drew Eubanks. Last season, Eubanks was the primary backup behind Jusuf Nurkic.

Zach Randolph: But I’m at the Four Seasons on Wilshire, and I’m downstairs. I see the general manager, Kevin Pritchard, right? At the time. So I walk up to KP, I’m like, ‘What’s up, KP?’ He’s like, ‘What’s up, Z-Bo?’ I was like, ‘Man, why am I getting traded?’ And he’s like, ‘Man, no, man, you’re not going. We want you here, you’re not getting traded.’ So I’m like, ‘Okay, cool.’ So I go upstairs, I tell a couple of my homies up there, I tell them, ‘Man, I just seen Pritchard, man, I’m cool. I ain’t going nowhere, I’m good. You know, I’m straight, I ain’t going nowhere.’ He just told me I ain’t going nowhere, right? Man, so we sitting back in the room, blowing, whatever, watching the draft come on. ‘Trade: Zach Randolph to the New York Knicks.’ Look, man, I’m—man, stomach dropped. Right back downstairs, man, sick. Stomach dropped. I go in the restroom, I’m sick as hell, right? So I’m like, ‘Man, I just seen this dude. He told me I ain’t—’ I said, ‘Man, it’s messed up, man, come on, man.'”

Paul George: KP was the GM in Indiana. And same situation, right? We have a meeting in New Orleans, All-Star Weekend. ‘Yo, am I getting traded? Just let me know, we can work with each other. Or not even that, just let me know so then now I could be at peace with that. Don’t just leave me out to dry.’ ‘No, you’re not getting traded, you’re not getting traded.’ Couple of days go by, agent hit me, like, ‘Man, the teams are calling cuz the Pacers are shopping you around.’ So I’m like, really? We just sat down on this subject right here.”

Kidd and NBA commissioner Adam Silver both talked about the importance of the accomplishment and the symbolism it can represent for the forever-long struggle of Black coaches in these leadership positions and what it means to them personally. Mazzulla, who’s mixed race, preferred to sidestep it, giving deference to his religion more than his racial identity. “I wonder how many of those have been Christian coaches,” Mazzulla said when asked Saturday, essentially, if two Black coaches in the NBA Finals meant anything to him.

It isn’t Mazzulla’s fault the history is the history. But he should at least be aware of it. Ignoring race in these matters isn’t progress, because it can infer that seeing someone as Black means something negative. Colorblindness is impossible, and seeing someone’s Blackness or the Black experience as a positive could be the ultimate sign of progress. “It’s always a discussion, because it doesn’t happen a lot,” Kidd told Yahoo Sports with a laugh Saturday afternoon. “In ’75, I was 2 years old. Joe wasn’t born. So I think for that to take place is huge. It just shows how far we’ve come, but we also have still a ways to go. I think it means something that we just have to continue to keep building on it.”
