Many will see it as the latest premium flagship from Xiaomi in its attempt to make a name for itself in the rapidly growing premium part of the Indian smartphone market, but make no mistake, it is the cameras of the Xiaomi 14 Ultra that make it truly special.

The Xiaomi 14 Ultra comes with four 50-megapixel sensors on the back - the main one being a one-inch sensor with support for OIS, accompanied by a floating telephoto camera with 3.2x optical zoom and OIS a periscope sensor again with OIS and 5x optical zoom support, and lastly an ultrawide sensor with 122-degree field of view. Xiaomi’s partnership with Leica means that all the cameras on the phone come with Leica tweaks and flavours, which include several shooting modes and effects, especially in terms of portrait snaps, and of course those very distinct Leica colours and plays of light and shadow. Selfies on the phone are handled by a 32-megapixel sensor on the front.

Of course, it is a flagship phone as well. It brings a 6.73-inch WQHD+ AMOLED display with 120Hz refresh rate, Dolby Vision and a peak brightness of 3,000 nits. The phone is powered by the top-of-the-line Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, with a 5,000 mAh battery with support for 90 W fast charging and 80 W wireless charging. It runs on Android 14 out of the box with Xiaomi’s HyperOS on top, and also comes with IP68 dust and water resistance, stereo speakers and that Xiaomi staple - an infrared port.

All of this is for Rs 99,999 for its single 16GB+512GB RAM and storage variant. And it is being released in very limited numbers too.

It might be a premium flagship in spec and price terms, but at its core, the Xiaomi 14 Ultra is all about photography, and Leica photography at that. But while it might boast some very impressive specs and camera muscle, it by no means assures it of a walkover for it in the camera phone category, which is packed with some very high-class snappers.

Here are five phones that can give the Xiaomi 14 Ultra a run for its camera cash (which is quite a lot):

Vivo X100 Pro: The Zeiss Maestro

Price: Rs 89,999

If there is one phone that even comes close to the Xiaomi 14 Ultra in terms of specs and camera mastery, it is the Vivo X100 Pro. Apart from the other flagship level specs like the 6.78-inch LTPO AMOLED display with 120 Hz refresh rate and the MediaTek Dimensity 9300 chipset that powers it or the massive 5,400mAh battery with very fast 100 W charging support, the phone also brings three 50-megapixel sensors to this camera party, making the phone’s camera setup very versatile.

Its main sensor is a one-inch one with OIS, accompanied by a periscope telephoto with OIS and 4.3 x optical zoom and an ultrawide sensor. Vivo has also collaborated with a celebrated camera name, Zeiss, to take its cameras to the next level and the lenses come with Zeiss T lens coating and several shooting options.

Those into portrait photography and macro shots will find the telephoto sensor on the phone letting them do a whole lot more than is usually seen on most phone cameras. There is a 32-megapixel camera on the front for selfies and video calls. The phone runs on Android 14 out of the box with FunTouch OS on top and comes with IP68 certifications and stereo speakers. And well, it starts at a lower price than the Xiaomi 14 Ultra.

Google Pixel 8 Pro: This Pixel-ation Is Awesome

Price: Rs 1,06,999

This is one device that needs no brand tie-up to prove its camera mettle. The Google Pixel range has been a photography master for the longest time and has kept getting better with each new Pixel.

The Pixel 8 Pro sits at the summit of the Google photography prowess mountain. The phone comes with a triple camera setup with a 50-megapixel main sensor with OIS, a 48-megapixel telephoto with OIS and 5X optical zoom and another 48-megapixel ultrawide sensor. Combine this megapixel muscle with Google’s computational photography magic and the results you get are some of the best the smartphone world has to offer.

There is a 10.5-megapixel front-facing camera for selfies and video calls. Apart from these impressive megapixel numbers, you also get Google’s Tensor G3 chipset which is not the greatest in terms of benchmarks but enables several smart features, many of which are in photography (magic eraser, anyone?).

While much more expensive than the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, the Samsung S24 Ultra is considered to be THE Android phone when it comes to photography. And for all the right reasons. The S24 Ultra comes with a huge 200-megapixel main sensor with OIS, a 50-megapixel periscope telephoto with 5x optical zoom with OIS, a 10-megapixel telephoto sensor with 3x optical zoom with OIS, and a 12-megapixel ultrawide sensor.

Combine this with exceptional zoom, several shooting modes and truckloads of AI magic, and you get a phone that is truly power-packed when it comes to photography. On the front, there is a 12-megapixel sensor for selfies and video calls. Of course, this is THE Android flagship too, so comes with a massive 6.8-inch Dynamic LTPO QHD+ AMOLED 2x display with 120Hz refresh rate and runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor with an ample amount of RAM and storage.

A 5,000mAh battery powers the phone with 45W charging as well as wireless charging support, and the phone runs on Android 14 with Samsung’s OneUI on top. You also get an IP68 rating, stereo speakers, and well, the S24 Ultra also comes with support for Samsung’s famous S Pen stylus, which allows you to scribble and draw on it.

This is hands down the most expensive phone in the list and while its megapixel count is nothing special, the iPhone 15 Pro Max is still believed to be the gold standard of smartphone photography and for good reason. The phone comes with a triple camera arrangement with a 48-megapixel main sensor, and two 12-megapixel sensors – one telephoto and another ultrawide.

There is another 12-megapixel sensor on the front for selfies. Although these numbers may not sound as impressive as others in this list, the results produced by these cameras often are unmatched in terms of sheer consistency of colour and detail.

It also offers users the option to take pictures at different focal lengths, and its implementation is among the smoothest we have seen. Of course, the phone is considered to be in a league of its own when it comes to capturing videos.

Apart from realistic colour reproduction and exceptional detail, the phone also brings a big 6.7 inch Super Retina XDR all-screen OLED display with 120 Hz refresh rate and runs on Apple’s fastest, most powerful A17 Pro chipset, which makes even editing video on the phone effortlessly smooth.

It also comes with a Dynamic Island, IP68 rating, stereo speakers, a day-long battery life and runs on Apple's famous, easily updatable iOS by Apple. Need we say more?

Xiaomi 14: Likeable Leica, Without Ultra

Price: Rs 69,999

If you love Leica but are not too certain about burning a Xiaomi 14 Ultra-sized hole in your wallet, you can opt for the Xiaomi 14. The Ultra-less device also brings flagship specs and features but with a few nicks and cuts. It has three 50-megapixel sensors – a main one with OIS, a telephoto with 3.2x optical zoom and OIS, and an ultrawide. While the main sensor is not a one-inch affair, and there is no fourth 50-megapixel sensor here, the Xiaomi 14 also comes embedded with a lot of the Leica goodness seen in the Xiaomi 14 Ultra.

It too gets several shooting modes and Leica lenses, taking its photography talents to another level. Here too, you get a 32-megapixel front-facing camera on board. Combine this with a compact design, a 6.36-inch OLED display with 120 Hz refresh rate, Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, 12GB + 512GB RAM and storage, Android 14 out of the box with HyperOS on top, IP68 rating and stereo speakers and you get an absolute smasher with Leica wizardry at a much more affordable price (the lowest in this list, in fact).

It comes with a comparatively smaller 4,610mAh battery which may disappoint some but it does come with 90W fast charging as well as wireless charging support which gets the phone back in the game quite quickly. You need not go Ultra to be Leica-ble.
